Lipstick and Revelations

The best Sephora I’ve ever shopped at was in Nice, France.

Nearing the end of our senior class trip to Europe last spring, my friend Gina and I headed straight toward Avenue Jean Médecin during one of the rare breaks in our jam-packed schedule. Located in the heart of Nice, The Avenue, as it is known by residents, houses the main shops of the city. I was Holly Golightly, staring longingly into the windows of outlets to the likes of Hermès. Down the line we found ourselves in front of Sephora, and well, we just couldn’t resist.

I felt like a child walking into a candy store. I know that’s an awful cliché, but with all the different products, brands and colors, Sephora really is a divine, tempting store to me and FIT-student Gina. We were playing amongst the makeup until we came across the Dior Addict lipstick collection. Brand new at the time, it was advertised on Kate Moss’s perfect pout. Typically I don’t spend too much on makeup; I love it, but with my limited budget, I tend to splurge on clothes and accessories. But I was drawn to Riviera, a gorgeous coral fit for every occasion. Gina and I each walked away with the $30 tube.

As silly as it might sound, I felt powerful and glamorous purchasing the new Dior shade. Yet for some reason I couldn’t bring myself to take it out of its shiny black case.

Fast forward a year to this past Saturday. As I was getting ready to go to a Gainesville Fashion Week event downtown, my friend Jenny assured me that my all black outfit (read more on my blog post) looked chic and Carrie Bradshaw-esque, but it was missing something, even after accessorizing with a chunky citrine necklace. I froze when she suggested I swipe on my prized Dior lipstick. It was just lipstick; what was the big deal?

This made me look at the bigger picture. To me, the lipstick represented the life I always dreamed of. A wonderful, exciting life in the fashion industry where I could express myself artistically with writing in addition to clothes and makeup. To do this, you have to be bold and take risks.

It was time to be honest with myself: I was scared. I was afraid to continue with this blog for fear that it wasn’t relevant or interesting. I was afraid of participating in class for fear of looking stupid. I was afraid to run outside for fear that it would hurt too much. And I became afraid of speaking to new people, especially guys, for fear of rejection.

I don’t know where this crummy attitude came from! It’s just not me. I must have realized this subconsciously because I had already begun making adjustments. Last week I largely contributed to my group discussions. I started running outside a few mornings a week and finished 5k Saturday afternoon. I mingled with other interns throughout the entire Gainesville Fashion Week event and even got up the nerve to invite the attractive bartender to our modeling casting call. And clearly I’ve come back to the blog, deciding that I need to find my voice again. Get excited for pretty spring posts!

If you have big plans, you need to act big. There’s no reason to hide behind the scenes.

As I smoothly applied the Dior lipstick yesterday afternoon, something clicked. I’ll be the first to admit that this connection is strange. How does lipstick make one realize that they’ve been shriveling up? I haven’t a clue, but I’m done questioning it. It’s time to enjoy the rest of the semester – my last of freshman year.

I’m just thrilled that I’m not too much of a cliché and reevaluated my life after Jan. 1.

How gorgeous is this color? I’m glad I’m finally getting use out of it. Ignore my chubby fingers.

I don’t know what I would do without Jenny. Doesn’t she look fab? She’s learning the art of fashion – and getting used to playing in a sister’s closet.

On Saturday I ran in the Gator Run with some amazing friends. This was my first 5k in two years! My mom might not be a fan of the PHanny pack (corny AEPhi joke), but I love it!

Gator Glory

A naive middle schooler commonly found in a daydream, I couldn’t wait to go to high school, where there was so much spirit that people danced on tables (High School Musical, I’m looking at you). Then I got to Cooper City High, where the students were only truly spirited on the Friday of the homecoming game. I suppose there was an inordinate amount of CCHS apparel seen daily, but that’s only because they came in the form of comfy t-shirts and sweatpants.

Life at the University of Florida is a whole other story. We’re all proud to be Gators; hundreds of students and faculty show their pride daily by donning bright orange and cobalt blue, and it’s not rare to see Albert the Alligator on a t-shirt or two.

I must have moved on from my High School Musical-fantasy days because I only own about three Gator tops, but I choose to show my spirit in other ways. May it be wearing cerulean Banana Republic shorts and accessorizing with an orange-detailed straw cross body or my newest trick: showing some scales.

With an alligator-print belt and blazer in my closet, my collection has just begun. But I’m not the only one paying homage to the alligator. The fall 2012 runways revealed an alligator obsession in both clothing and accessories from Max Mara to Fendi. Even Rachel’s Zoe’s Team has caught on, finding themselves “fixated by alligator” and promoting Mitchel Primrose’s Fall 2012 accessory collection.

Before I fell for Fendi’s exotic patterns and wild use of shag fur, I was enamored and inspired by the Armani Privé Spring 2012 Couture show. While an entire collection of green could easily go wrong, each scheme was used wonderfully and masterfully, fitting the jungle-inspired motif. Structured blazers dominated the line and were paired with equally well-fitted skirts and straight-leg pants. The gator-print and mesh-like fabric worked seamlessly together, making a fierce statement.

I guess our mascot says a lot about the school: While we can be elegant and graceful, we’re also a wild force to be reckoned with.

The Look

A bit python, a bit gator. I still love it!

The battle between wearing the blazer or the belt ended when I realized just how hot it was outside.

Go Gators!

The Girl With The Gator Shirt

I’ve been bit by the University of Florida bug.

It has barely been two days, yet I feel like I’ve been here a lifetime. Right now I’m laying on my newspaper printed duvet cover – are you at all surprised? – soaking in the freedom and academia.

Being here and excitedly setting up my room reminds me of Cherubs. It’s crazy to think it’s almost been a full year since I walked through Northwestern’s campus and had the best summer of my life. Well, maybe up until now. It’s a close tie: Cherubs centered around journalism, which is where I met close friends who share my passion, but there’s just something about being a college student. This summer is the start to the rest of my life. Scary, right?

Anyway, things are absolutely amazing. I’ve already made great friends and love my room mate. She’s fun, bubbly and so much fun to be around. And we have the cutest room around. Check out my side!

It’s small, simple and all around perfect. Time to go, ice cream social and then a night out on campus. There’s much to look forward to, so stay tuned!

Medieval Beauties Take Fashion Week

At 18 years old, I had the opportunity to say I went to Fashion Week for work. Olivia, along with her incredible team, was lucky enough to be a part of the hair and makeup team for By Misha, a unique collection that had all of us drooling. I of course got to tag along and experience the chaos backstage and the glamour of the runway.

The building was in a hairspray-scented frenzy as long, lean women sat in makeup chairs, staring longingly at all the avant-garde spring looks. After slipping into my OMG! Artistry tank top, I joined the team as we strutted to our workstation donning luscious waves and professional pencil skirts. I was bouncing with excitement as I took pictures of the By Misha clothing rack, wanting to rip each Renaissance-esque article of clothing off its hangers. The collection, named Crown Jewels, was inspired by storybooks, fairy tales and royalty; each garment was even named after a queen. The collection surely stood out from the crowd, featuring purple and magenta hues mixed with luxurious gold. There was draping, pleats and bejeweled crowns – the epitome of romance. The adorable Brit Misha was rushing around, overseeing everything with her mom by her side as her equally beautiful sister applied gold nail polish to the models’ nails. I tiptoed around the station with a video camera, a point-and-shoot and my iPhone, documenting every second of my time there. I stood in awe of Olivia and her team as they weaved braids into the models’ hair for a modern yet ethereal vibe.  A few hours later, it was time for me to take my seat and prepare for my live feed.

I’m sure I bothered everyone around me, but I didn’t care. Luckily for me the stands weren’t filled and I was able to seat-hop, ensuring I was in the best possible location to lift my phone and snap photo, instantly posting them to Olivia’s Facebook feed, which automatically updated her Twitter. It was amazing: I sat tall in my seat, feeling like the fashion writer I’ve always dreamed of being. I commented on some of my favorite looks of the evening, like Minka Swimwear’s pink peplum one-piece, Lisu Vega’s dramatic head wraps and By Misha’s pleated yellow skirt paired with a gold, cropped jacket. Leaving with visions of attending New York and Paris Fashion Week, I strode back to my car with the biggest smile, ready to take on the fashion world.

Check out more By Misha Fashion Week photos on Olivia and Misha’s fan pages. Make sure to check out By Misha’s website for more collections. But here’s a sneak peak!

I would do anything for the shorts.

I was so jealous when Alexandra showed me the top she was wearing in the show. But seriously, how many girls can rock that?

I'm in love with this deep purple gown. It would make the perfect prom dress!

What a fierce pose. And how darling are these crowns?!

This is one of my favorite looks. It took all my strength not to take the skirt!

The talented Misha! It was such a joy meeting her.

Bon Voyage!

Sorry it’s been so long since my last post. I have a lot of updates, but you’ll just have to wait until I get back from Europe. That’s right, Europe! For the next 12 days I’ll be touring around England and France (I know, I just missed Paris Fashion Week!). This doesn’t even seem real; traveling has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember.

As soon as I get back I’ll post a little diary of my trip accompanied by a massive amount of photos.

In the meantime, check out my beauty and fashion tips on OMG! Artistry’s Twitter and Facebook. Thank goodness for Hootsuite!

The Next Annie Leibovitz?

I’m confused: I thought being a “second semester senior” meant finally getting a chance to relax. Unfortunately, I found this wasn’t the case. I’ve been busier than ever trying to get The Lariat out, study for tests and write literature essays. I decided those could wait for a few moments while I finally blogged. Hopefully I can start doing this regularly.

Anyway, what I really wanted to do was display my photography. I’m loving this class! Not only do I get to see Lauren Kravec every Thursday, but also I am no longer intimidated by my camera! Here are some of my favorites from the last few weeks. (Sorry for the picture overload)

Photography Assignment Week 1: Play with your camera

Taken at the park in my neighborhood. This little shell is too cute.

I love the juxtaposition of the beat-up garbage can with the words, "Cooper City, Someplace Special" written on it.

Without him, the lawn would be so boring.

Photography Class 2: Action and Architecture

How cool?!

Photography Assignment 2: Ready, set, action!

Meet my mom!

My absolute favorite photo.

It was the best architecture subject I could find. But I love it; it looks like I was on a farm.

Photography Class 3: Radical Neon

Photography Class 4: Strike a Pose at TYE Studios

I'm in love with this picture. Lauren was the perfect model!

Capturing The Fabulous ’50s

Clinging to beautiful, elegant men, the girls worked their glamorous gowns, pouting their sultry red lips and batting their luscious long eyelashes in such a way that instantly commanded attention. With the help of talented makeup artists, stylists and photographers, we were transported to the ’50s, where alluring women exuded undeniable confidence. For a few hours, we truly were in Old Hollywood.

On January 31, I left school early to join Olivia on a photo shoot at America’s Production Company in Boca Raton with photographers Jean Dumas and Craig Jeffry. They held the shoot for the unbelievable (and super secret) project their working on, and in the process they were helping makeup artists, hair stylists and fashion stylists gain more exposure. It was only my second photo shoot, but I felt so comfortable there. Olivia claims I’m getting lucky: Despite rumors of the industry I was getting into, I’ve been surrounded by the sweetest people. Everyone was laughing and bobbing their heads to the Katy Perry playlist blaring from a laptop. Early on, I felt I was with old friends.

When I arrived, I saw a gorgeous model channeling the iconic Marilyn Monroe (and quite convincingly, might I add). With her coiffed blond hair and sleek black gown, I was digging the look. What can I say; I’m a sucker for old Hollywood glamour. Riffling through the racks, stylist and all-around fun guy Louis Calveiro explained that all the dresses, though different designers, came from La Casa Hermosa, a fabulous boutique that caters to everything from prom to pageants to weddings. Though, I had to fight the urge to try the dresses on. In the midst of searching for my own prom dress, I found inspiration in the embellished, colorful gowns as well as the elegant, lacey ones. Each one fit the models like a glove, including Olivia, who volunteered the intricate bridal gown and proved that she’s not only meant to be behind the scenes.

The photographers were some of the most diligent I’ve ever seen. They worked well into the evening, making sure they had the most variety possible. While we were all tired, everyone still wore smiles, all exchanging business cards. As the models shimmied out of their gowns, I knew I had to leave my old Hollywood fantasy behind and go back to the real world.
